Raising a son is like watching a fragment of yourself break free, stepping into the world on its own. Each word, each step he takes, he drifts further from you, molding into who he's destined to be. It's like your heart is out there, navigating the world independently, evolving beyond your grasp. This detachment, though it carves a void, paradoxically fills you. There's a strange fulfillment in this letting go, a realization that through his journey towards autonomy, you're arriving at a fuller sense of what it is to be a man.
It's in this release, this acceptance of his individuality, that you find yourself becoming whole and truly becoming a father.
Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the great dads out there. I’m lucky enough to have had some amazing fathers as mentors and friends throughout my life. Now that I’m a dad I get to return the honor of helping, guiding, commiserating, and celebrating new dads as well as the ones deep in their stride.

Now that my son is 10, skills and shared experiences are becoming more and more valuable. Those also need tools at times to get through. Michael Williams of ACL put together a great list, as he’s always done. Huckberry, who I frequently work with also has a great list.

Below you will find my list of things and experiences that I think will make meaningful gifts for that father in your life.
Overland Experts - Learn the skills to go farther in your vehicle.
The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Daring Book for Girls - These books have been a go-to gift since it was first given to me as a new dad.
Green River Canoe Trip - While my trip down the Green River with my son was self-supported, you can use guides and have an incredible time with your kid(s).
Filson 48hr Tin Cloth Duffle - This bag makes for the perfect carry-all for your spawn, no matter how young. From diapers and snacks to baseball gear and snacks, mine has lasted the last 10 years.
National Luna Fridge - My fridge was given to me as a gift 16 years ago and it changed my life. I still have the same unit, I’ve only had to replace the control panel, it has lived through 5 different vehicles.
King Kennedy Tote - You don’t have to look like you’re grocery shopping when carrying some goods around. Made from vintage rugs in Los Angeles, these totes are the best.
Rivay Linen Camp Shirt - I’ve worn a version of this shirt over the past 5-6 years. I love that it has two button pockets to carry the ephemera of a little lad.
Brooklyn Coachworks - If you really want to make someone smile, place your order now for next year’s Fathers Day.
American Optics Saratoga - I was turned onto this brand years ago by the aforementioned Michael Williams ACL, when it was the blog of choice. I’ve worn these with my Rx on most, if not all of my adventures with my son.
James Brand Knife - The Wells Pocket Knife has become a constant companion since I lost my Benchmade to the TSA. Named after the Wells projectile Point found in Cherokee country, it’s a minimalist, utilitarian dream tool.
Red Cottage - Book a weekend away at some of the most discerning properties and put some of those skills to the test.
Art - Buy art, it’s a gift that keeps on giving.
